Carpet padding is the part of the job nobody looks at and everybody feels. In Bellingham homes, where a slab or a vented crawlspace can push cool, damp air up into the floor system through the wet months, the pad under your carpet does more than soften a footstep. It buffers moisture, it protects the carpet backing, and it decides whether your new carpet still looks new in year five or flattens out by year two.

What Carpet Padding Actually Does in a Pacific Northwest Home
The pad is a structural component, not a comfort upgrade. It absorbs the compression load from foot traffic so the carpet fibers are not crushed directly against the subfloor. Get it wrong and the carpet does the cushioning work itself, which is exactly how you get matted traffic lanes down a hallway in Barkley or Cordata.
Moisture buffering matters more here than in a dry climate
Pacific Northwest humidity means the air inside a Bellingham home spends months in the 55 to 70 percent relative humidity range. A pad sitting on a cool slab or over an underheated crawlspace can hold that dampness at the seam between pad and subfloor. Closed-cell and moisture barrier pads are built for this. Open-cell bonded foam without a film layer is not, and in a Fairhaven basement conversion that difference shows up as a musty smell within two winters.
Sound and thermal performance
Padding is also the cheapest sound control you can buy. In a Sehome or downtown condo with an HOA sound rating requirement, the pad plus carpet assembly is usually what gets you over the line. Density, Thickness, and the Number Most People Read Wrong
Homeowners ask for a thick pad. What they should ask for is a dense one. Thickness is how tall the pad is. Density is how much material is packed into it, measured in pounds per cubic foot. Density carries the load. Thickness beyond a certain point actually hurts.
The density numbers to specify
- 6 lb density: builder grade. Acceptable in a guest bedroom or a closet. It will pack out under traffic.
- 8 lb density: the sensible residential baseline for bedrooms, home offices, and low-traffic living areas.
- 10 lb density: what we recommend for stairs, hallways, and any main living area in a family home.
- Rubber or 12 lb and up: rental turnovers, home gyms, and commercial-adjacent spaces where you want the pad to outlive the carpet.
Thickness: 7/16 inch is the honest answer
Most residential carpet manufacturers cap the pad at 7/16 inch and require a minimum density, often 6 or 8 lb, as a condition of the warranty. Go thicker than 1/2 inch and the carpet backing flexes too much over the pad, the seams work themselves apart, and the tack strip loses its grip at the perimeter. A 1/2 inch, 4 lb pad feels wonderful in the showroom and fails fastest in the house. On stairs, drop to 3/8 inch so the carpet can wrap the nosing cleanly.
Pad Types and Which Ones Belong in a Bellingham House
Bonded urethane, also called rebond
The multicolored recycled foam pad. It is the default and it is fine, provided you buy density rather than loft. Specify 8 lb minimum, 10 lb for traffic areas, and require a moisture barrier film if it is going anywhere near a slab or a room over a crawlspace.
Memory foam and frothed foam
Soft underfoot and popular in primary bedrooms. Frothed polyurethane is the higher-end version and holds up well. Standard memory foam pad is a comfort product, not a durability product. Keep it out of hallways.
Fiber pads, including felt and synthetic
Firm, dense, and low profile. This is the right call under Berber and other low-pile loop carpets, which need a firm base or the loops distort. Synthetic fiber outperforms natural felt in our climate because natural fiber will take on moisture and hold it.
Rubber pads
Waffle rubber is dated and can degrade. Flat slab rubber is the premium option: dense, inherently moisture resistant, and the longest lived. It costs the most and it is worth it on a basement stair run or in a rental you do not want to touch again for a decade.
What Carpet Padding Costs in Bellingham in 2026
Padding is priced by the square foot and is usually bundled into the installed carpet number, which is why homeowners rarely see it broken out. Ask for it broken out. That is where a low bid hides.
2026 material pricing, installed
- 6 lb rebond: $0.35 to $0.55 per square foot
- 8 lb rebond with moisture barrier: $0.60 to $0.90 per square foot
- 10 lb rebond or frothed foam: $0.90 to $1.35 per square foot

Labor and tear-out
Removing and hauling old carpet and pad typically runs $0.50 to $1.25 per square foot depending on stair count and access. If the old pad is stapled and it disintegrates on removal, expect the higher end. Budget separately if the subfloor turns out to need attention once the old pad comes up.
Subfloor Condition Decides Everything Underneath
A pad cannot fix a bad subfloor. It hides one temporarily, which is worse.
Moisture testing before the pad goes down
We test subfloor moisture content before any pad is laid, the same way we do under hardwood. Plywood or OSB should read in the same range NWFA moisture spec would want for a wood floor, generally under 12 percent, and a slab should pass a calcium chloride or in-situ RH test. A pad laid over a subfloor at 16 percent is a mold problem with carpet on top of it.
Crawlspace ventilation and vapor barrier
Many older homes in Columbia, Lettered Streets, and the York neighborhood have crawlspaces with a torn or missing ground vapor barrier and blocked vents. The cheapest fix to a persistently cold, damp carpet is not a thicker pad. It is a 6 mil ground barrier and clear crawlspace ventilation. Do that first.
Squeaks and unevenness
Carpet and pad will mask a squeak for about a season, then it comes back louder. If the deck moves, screw it down before the pad goes in. Uneven spots telegraph through carpet faster than most people expect. One pad for the whole house

Skipping the moisture barrier on a basement or slab

How Long Carpet Padding Lasts, and When to Replace It
A well specified pad outlasts the carpet above it, but that only holds if the density was right on day one and the pad stayed dry.
Expected service life
An 8 to 10 lb rebond pad in a Bellingham home should give 12 to 15 years, roughly matching a mid grade carpet. A 6 lb builder pad in a busy hallway is done in 5 to 7. Flat slab rubber can go 20 years or more and is frequently reusable if the carpet is replaced first and the pad is undamaged, though most manufacturers will still want a new pad to honor a warranty.
Signs the pad is finished
- Visible traffic lanes that do not lift after cleaning
- A hollow, crunchy sound underfoot near the perimeter
