Locals call them the Lettered Streets. That's the alphabetical grid from A Street to J Street that makes up one of Bellingham's most walkable neighborhoods. You can grab coffee at Lettered Streets Coffeehouse, walk your kids to Whatcom Middle School, and never touch your car all weekend. The homes here date back to the 1890s: detailed Victorians, Craftsman Four-Squares with their wide front porches, Colonial Revivals with ornate trim and fish-scale shingles. The flooring underneath is just as historic.

Flooring across Lettered Streets

Home styles we work on: Victorian Queen Annes, Craftsman Four-Squares with wide porches, Colonial Revivals, early American bungalows, some converted multi-family.

Lettered Streets flooring is mostly original, mostly hidden, and mostly worth saving. The 1890s-1910s homes here have narrow-plank tongue-and-groove pine in service rooms (kitchens, halls, back stairs) and quarter-sawn oak in formal rooms (parlor, dining, master bedroom). Both refinish beautifully if there's enough wood left above the tongue, which there usually is.

We approach Lettered Streets refinishing with the same softer-grit progression we use in Fairhaven. Old pine sands easily, too easily if you start at 36 grit, and we don't want to remove a millimeter of irreplaceable wood when 60 grit is enough. Quarter-sawn oak in the formal rooms can handle slightly more aggressive sanding but the goal is the same: preserve as much original wood as possible.

Kitchens in updated Lettered Streets homes increasingly use modern tile (porcelain, large-format) over the original pine, which we install with crack-isolation membranes to prevent telegraphing through the new tile from the original substrate underneath.

Climate considerations for Lettered Streets

These older homes have single-pane windows and less insulation, which causes condensation that pushes hardwood toward swing-season cup. We recommend whole-room humidifiers paired with refinishing.

Common Lettered Streets flooring projects

Period pine and fir refinishing, careful board-by-board repair with reclaimed sources, narrow-plank quarter-sawn oak restoration, modern tile in updated kitchens

Why Lettered Streets homeowners choose us

Lettered Streets homeowners value the original character of these homes. We refinish what's there, source reclaimed when we have to repair, and apply period-appropriate finishes (oil-modified poly for warmer color tone, matte sheens) that match the era. We don't recommend ripping up irreplaceable original flooring.
