Hardwood is still the right floor for most main-level rooms in Bellingham homes. The trick is picking the right species, the right format (solid vs engineered), and the right subfloor prep, and then installing with proper acclimation. We do all four. Bellingham averages 36 inches of rain a year and 75% relative humidity, which puts solid hardwood at the edge of its tolerance unless the crawlspace is dry, the subfloor is sound, and the wood acclimates properly before going down.

Hardwood Floor Installation project in Bellingham, WA

What we install

Solid hardwood (oak, maple, hickory, walnut, cherry, fir, exotic species) and engineered hardwood from Mohawk, Shaw, Mannington, Bruce, Armstrong, and Anderson Tuftex. Plank widths from 2.25 inches up to 9-inch wide-plank. Both nail-down and glue-down systems depending on the subfloor. Solid hardwood works in homes with crawlspace ventilation and stable subfloor moisture. Engineered hardwood is more forgiving in PNW humidity and can install over radiant heat or slab-on-grade. We bring physical samples to your home so you can see the species and finish in your light, with your existing trim and cabinetry.

Our installation process

1. Subfloor measurement and moisture test

We measure every room and run a moisture meter on the subfloor before we quote. If a vapor barrier is needed or joists are settled, you see it on the estimate. We document readings on the contract.

2. Acclimation period

Solid hardwood acclimates 3-7 days in the actual installation room. Engineered acclimates 48-72 hours. The schedule goes in writing. Skipping acclimation is the most common cause of cup or gap in year one, and we don't do it.

3. Prep and underlayment

Old flooring removed, subfloor leveled if needed, vapor barrier or rosin paper installed per manufacturer spec. Joist sister-ing if subfloor deflection exceeds 1/8 inch in 6 feet.

4. Installation

Nail-down (16-gauge cleats every 6-8 inches), glue-down (full-spread urethane), or floating (engineered click-lock). Stair noses and transitions handled in the same scope, with material consistent across rooms.

5. Walkthrough

We walk every room with you, hand off manufacturer warranty paperwork, and provide care instructions for the first 30 days. Our labor warranty runs 2 years; manufacturer material warranty varies by product (typically 25-50 years on residential hardwood).

What it costs in Bellingham

Current Bellingham pricing for hardwood installation runs $8 to $14 per square foot installed. A typical 1,500 to 1,800 square foot home is $12,000 to $28,000, with the spread driven by species, plank width, and subfloor condition.

What changes the price: subfloor condition (level, moisture, soundness), plank width (wide-plank costs more in both material and labor), species and grade (white oak premium grade vs select oak), demo and haul-away of existing flooring, transitions and stair noses, and finish type if site-finished.

Why hire professionals for hardwood install in Bellingham

Hardwood installation is one of the few home improvement projects where DIY almost never makes sense. The tools (nailers, cleats, edge sanders, moisture meters) cost more than the labor savings. The acclimation period is non-obvious. The subfloor prep is invisible until it fails. The transitions, stair noses, and edge work are where amateur installs look amateur.

Beyond the tools and skill, manufacturer warranties commonly require certified installation. Mohawk's Edge Pro program, Shaw's Pinnacle Pro program, COREtec's Certified Installer program: warranties through these programs apply to professional installs only. DIY voids material warranty on most premium hardwood brands.

Our crew is NWFA Certified and INSTALL-aligned. Every solid and engineered hardwood project follows NWFA installation guidelines. We don't subcontract hardwood install to day labor.

FAQ for hardwood floor installation

Solid or engineered hardwood for Bellingham?
Engineered is generally better for Bellingham's humidity and works over more subfloor types. Solid still wins in well-ventilated main floors and refinishes more times over its life. We recommend per room.
How long does the acclimation period take?
3 to 7 days for solid, 48 to 72 hours for engineered. The material sits in the installation room before we lay it. Skipping acclimation is the most common cause of cupping or gapping in year one.
Can you install over my existing hardwood?
Sometimes. If the existing floor is sound and flat, engineered hardwood can install over it. Solid usually requires removal. We measure substrate before recommending.
How long does the project take?
3 to 5 days plus acclimation for a typical home. Larger homes or stair-heavy projects run longer. We give you a calendar with the estimate.
Do you handle stairs?
Yes. Hardwood stair treads and risers run $95 to $180 per tread including risers. Stair noses come from the same product as the floor for consistent appearance.
Will you move my furniture?
We move heavy furniture (sofas, beds, dining tables) on day 1. We ask that you remove what you can in advance, especially anything irreplaceable.
Do you handle the demo?
Yes, demo and haul-away are line items on the quote. Carpet pull and disposal: $0.50 per sqft. Tile demo (older mortared installs): $2 to $4 per sqft.
What if my subfloor is bad?
We test subfloor condition during the quote visit. If joists are settled or moisture is high, the subfloor scope is on the estimate before any flooring work is priced. We don't lay hardwood over compromised substrate.
Can I get a sample?
Yes. We bring physical samples to the in-home estimate so you can see the species and finish in your light. We can leave samples for 24 hours so you can see them in different lighting throughout the day.
What's the warranty?
Manufacturer material warranty (25-50 years typical on premium residential hardwood) and our 2-year labor warranty. We document both at project completion in writing.
