Sheet vinyl vs. LVP in Bellingham: the short answer
Sheet vinyl wins on price and on keeping water out of the subfloor. LVP wins on repair, feel underfoot, and resale. In Bellingham, sheet vinyl runs $2.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed and luxury vinyl plank runs $4.40 to $11.00 per square foot installed. For a small wet room nobody tours when you sell the house, sheet vinyl is usually the smarter money. For a kitchen, a hallway, or an open main floor, LVP earns the difference back.
Sheet vinyl is a single continuous roll of flexible vinyl, usually 12 feet wide, cut and fitted so a small room ends up with no joints at all. Luxury vinyl plank is rigid vinyl cut into board shapes that click or glue together, which means every plank edge is a joint. That one structural difference drives most of what follows, and it matters more here than it would in a dry climate. Bellingham takes roughly 36 inches of rain a year at about 75 percent average humidity, so water finding a joint is a matter of when.

Both are vinyl. That is where the similarity stops, because they are built differently, installed differently, and fail differently.
Sheet vinyl, defined
Sheet vinyl is a flexible floor covering sold in rolls, typically 6 or 12 feet wide, with a printed design layer protected by a clear wear layer on top. Residential goods carry a wear layer of about 8 to 20 mil, and the backing is either felt (glued down at the perimeter or fully) or fiberglass (usually loose-laid and more forgiving). The stuff on the market in 2026 has moved a long way from the 1970s kitchens most people picture when they hear the word.
LVP, defined
Luxury vinyl plank, shortened to LVP, is rigid vinyl formed into wood-look boards with a core, a printed layer, and a wear layer measured in mils. Most product sold in Whatcom County uses an SPC core (stone plastic composite, dense and dimensionally stable) or a WPC core (wood plastic composite, softer and warmer). Wear layers run 6, 12, 20, and 30 mil, and that number is the single best predictor of how long the floor survives a hallway. Our guide to wear layer and core selection goes deeper on picking a spec.

Get a free quoteThe joint question, which is the whole argument in a wet climate
A floor keeps water off the subfloor at its weakest line, and on vinyl that line is always a joint. This is why the cheaper product sometimes protects better than the expensive one.
Roll width against room width
A standard 12-foot roll covers most Bellingham laundry rooms, half baths, and hall baths in one unbroken piece. A 5 by 8 bathroom, an 8 by 10 laundry, a 9 by 11 back entry: all of those come out of one cut with the material turned up slightly at the walls and hidden by base trim. Push past 12 feet in either direction and you need a welded joint, which is where sheet vinyl loses part of its advantage. On residential goods the joint is closed with a cold seam sealer, a liquid that chemically fuses the two edges into one surface. Commercial goods get heat welded with a vinyl rod, which is stronger and costs more.
What a click joint does and does not do
"Waterproof" on an LVP box means the plank itself will not swell when it gets wet. It does not mean the assembled floor is a basin. Water sitting on a click joint for hours will find its way down the locking profile and onto the subfloor, where it has nowhere to dry in a Bellingham winter. That distinction is worth understanding before you buy, and we broke it down in detail in what the waterproof labels actually mean. Glue-down LVP closes some of that gap because the adhesive bed blocks the path down, which is why it is the usual pick for basements.
The failure mode each one has
Sheet vinyl fails by tearing, gouging, or lifting at the perimeter after years of being scrubbed. LVP fails at the joints: a lifted lock line, a peaked seam where a floating floor had nowhere to expand, or cupping over a subfloor that stayed wet all winter. Neither failure is the product's fault most of the time. In older homes near the Lettered Streets and Sehome, it usually traces to what is under the floor rather than what is on it.
What each costs in Bellingham in 2026
Sheet vinyl is the cheapest fully waterproof surface you can put in a Bellingham house, and it is not close.
By the room
Using the ranges above, a 60 square foot bathroom lands near $440 to $825 in sheet vinyl and $550 to $990 in waterproof LVP. An 80 square foot laundry runs about $160 to $400 in sheet material cost terms but bills at the shop minimum, which we get to next. A full 1,000 square foot main floor runs roughly $2,000 to $5,000 in sheet vinyl against $3,850 to $10,400 in LVP. On a whole floor the gap is thousands, which is why sheet vinyl still moves in rental and flip work across Bellingham and Ferndale.
The small-room minimum that breaks the math
Below roughly 150 square feet, per-square-foot pricing stops describing reality. An installer still has to measure, buy a partial roll, haul a table, cut, fit, and seal, and that work costs the same in a 40 square foot powder room as it does in a 120 square foot one. Expect a job minimum in the $400 to $500 range for a single small room. If you are already replacing the bathroom floor, adding the adjacent laundry in the same visit costs far less per foot than booking it separately.
Subfloor prep is the line item that moves
Sheet vinyl is thin and flexible, so it copies whatever is underneath it. A screw head, a panel edge, a patch of old adhesive: all of it shows through within a season. Most sheet installs in older Bellingham homes need a fresh 1/4-inch underlayment panel screwed down first, which adds about $1.00 to $2.00 per square foot. LVP with a rigid core bridges minor dips, but it still needs the subfloor flat to about 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and our subfloor flatness guide covers how that gets measured and corrected. Where rot or a wet crawlspace shows up, subfloor repair runs $300 to $2,500 per area and moisture remediation runs $500 to $3,500 before any flooring goes down.
Where each one belongs in a Bellingham house
The right answer changes room by room, and in this climate it changes based on what is under the floor.
Laundry rooms, half baths, and rentals
Sheet vinyl. A washer supply line lets go maybe once a decade, and when it does, an unbroken sheet buys you hours before water reaches the subfloor while a click floor gives it a path in minutes. Landlords running units near Western Washington University replace flooring on turnover cycles, and at $2.00 to $5.00 a foot the math is hard to argue with. Our laundry room flooring guide walks through the drain and appliance details.
Kitchens, halls, and open main floors
LVP. These are the rooms buyers walk through, and a wood-look plank with a 20 mil wear layer holds up to a Whatcom County winter of wet boots and dog traffic without looking like a rental. The continuous run also matters: a 20-foot great room needs a joint in sheet vinyl anyway, so the sheet advantage evaporates while the plank advantages stay. Most of the LVP and laminate installation work our crews book in Bellingham is exactly this, main-floor plank over a properly prepped subfloor.
Homes over a crawlspace
Test first, choose second. Vinyl of any kind traps whatever vapor is coming up from below, and a good share of Bellingham housing sits on a crawlspace that has never been fully dry. Resilient flooring over concrete is checked with ASTM F2170 in-situ relative humidity probes or ASTM F1869 calcium chloride tests, and over a wood subfloor a pin meter reading tells you whether you are about to seal moisture in. Skipping that step is the most expensive way to save an afternoon. Start with how we test subfloor moisture here, and if the numbers are bad, fix the crawlspace before you spend a dollar on flooring.
Repair, lifespan, and what the next buyer sees
Damage is where the two products separate most sharply, and it is the part homeowners think about least at purchase.
A tear against a swapped plank
A gouge in sheet vinyl can be patched, but the patch is visible unless it lands under an appliance, and matching a discontinued pattern five years later rarely works. A damaged LVP plank comes out and a new one goes in. Buy one extra box at install and store it in a closet, not the garage, where Bellingham humidity swings will affect it. That single box is the cheapest floor insurance available.
Lifespan in this climate
Sheet vinyl gives 10 to 20 years in a Bellingham home, with the low end being a heavily used kitchen and the high end a guest bath. Quality LVP at 20 mil or thicker reaches 20 to 25 years, while thin 6 to 12 mil product wears through the traffic lanes in about 10. Both numbers assume a dry subfloor. Over a wet one, either floor can be gone in five.
Resale
Sheet vinyl reads as utilitarian, which is fine in a laundry room and a liability in a kitchen. LVP reads as a finished upgrade, especially in the wide-plank, low-sheen looks selling in the newer Barkley and Sudden Valley builds. If you plan to list within three years, the plank is usually worth the spread on the rooms buyers actually see.
Before you book either one
Verify the contractor's registration through the Washington State L&I contractor lookup and confirm the bond and insurance are current. Straight flooring replacement generally does not trigger a permit here, but if the job involves structural subfloor work, the City of Bellingham permit office can tell you what applies.
